Description
This course introduces students to theoretical models and research findings in the field of sociolinguistics. It is intended to expand students’ awareness of social aspects of language variation and their implications for linguistic analysis. It also provides students with the necessary tools to develop their own research.

- identify and define the concepts involved in societal influences on language and vice versa.
- connect and correlate external and internal variables of a speech community that affect phonological and morphosyntactic Hispanic variation and change in the speech community.
- articulate political and social issues related to language use explain different cultural practices including language and artifacts that represent the communities that produced them and how they serve to create, refine, and blend culture.
- articulate a range of values, attitudes, and methods of organizing cultural and social experiences so as to understand the possibilities and limitations of their own world view and the place of minority and majority communities.
- demonstrate understanding by producing work commensurate with a high level of competence in language variation, both from diachronic and synchronic perspectives.
