Description
Systematic examination of the Spanish language through theoretical linguistics (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics) and applied linguistics (variation, change, bilingualism, language acquisition, and history of the language).

- define key terms and apply main concepts in Spanish phonology, phonetics, morphology, syntax, and semantics/pragmatics.
- articulate linguistic concepts, language universals, and unique features of different varieties of Spanish to assess and analyze linguistics problems (CO1, CO11).
- use the International Phonetic Alphabet to transcribe Spanish words at the phonetic and phonemic levels and draw syntactic trees representing superficial and deep structures.
- assess the consequences of language contact for language change, language death, and language genesis.
- demonstrate and synthesize advanced knowledge and skills of Spanish theoretical linguistics through class presentations and written materials (a research project and critical analysis of published studies). (CO1, CO3, CO13).
