Overview
Description
In this course, students will combine study of theoretical ethics with service to Nevada schools. Students will learn about key ideas, arguments and frameworks in ethics: the philosophical study of how we should live and what we should do. They will also participate in an ongoing discussion about effective pedagogy and facilitating ethical discourse. Students will apply this knowledge in a coaching capacity in high schools as they train teams for the regional Nevada High School Ethics Bowl.

- state a thesis about a problem in ethics, and provide evidence and philosophical argument (including replies to counter-arguments) in its defense.
- distinguish better and worse reasoning, and recognize relevant logical relationships and patterns of inference in different ethical theories.
- show what is at stake in key debates in theoretical ethics, and indicate how different positions in these debates can help elucidate our understanding of social and political issues in the world.
- work effectively with high school students, teachers and administrators in coaching capacity in the fields of discourse and ethical debate and inquiry.
- evaluate the service activity and associated social issue through the theoretical lens of the course content.
