Overview
Description
Physiological pathways for detoxification that mainly centers around phase I and phase II enzyme systems. How do food-derived compounds and nutrients modulate processes involved in the conversion and excretion of toxins from the body? Examine clinical applications to improve patient health or reduce disease burden; examining detoxification with disease state, genetic polymorphisms and drug-nutrient interactions.

- apply an understanding of environmental, molecular factors (e.g. genes, proteins, metabolites) and food in the regulation of detoxification in order to maintain health or manage disease.
- document the importance of anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry in the regulation of detoxification.
- compare and contrast pathophysiology and nutritional biochemistry in the control of Phase I and II metabolism.
- recommend, prescribe and administer diet therapy based on their knowledge of pharmacology and biotransformation.
- apply their understanding of complementary and integrative nutrition (e.g. dietary supplements) on drug interactions and phase I and II metabolism in disease and health.
