Topics include donor screening, component therapy, ABO/Rh and other blood group systems, pre-transfusion and compatibility testing, and antibody identification. Covers HDFN, neonatal/obstetrical transfusions, autoimmune hemolytic anemias, and transfusion reactions. Focus on safety, quality, and clinical application

  • demonstrate proper specimen handling, labeling, and storage in accordance with transfusion safety protocols and evaluate sample for suitability for testing.
  • perform ABO and Rh typing using forward and reverse methods, resolving discrepancies when necessary.
  • carry out antibody screening using gel, tube, or solid-phase methodologies and interpret the results.
  • identify antibodies using comprehensive panel interpretation with attention to enhancement media, dosage, and phase reactivity.
  • perform crossmatches using immediate spin, antiglobulin (IAT), and electronic methods with appropriate interpretation.
  • resolve technical discrepancies including mixed field agglutination, rouleaux, and autoantibody interference.
  • conduct direct antiglobulin testing (DAT) and interpret findings related to autoimmune hemolytic anemia and HDFN.
  • describe the use of elution and adsorption techniques in resolving complex cases involving autoantibodies or multiple alloantibodies.
  • apply and document quality control procedures including reagent QC, equipment checks, and corrective actions.
  • describe immunohematology automation and assess its performance against manual methods for accuracy and reliability.
  • identify pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical causes of error in laboratory testing.
