Learning Outcomes

  • conceptualize and discuss basic concepts on stress, stress, and strain-strain relationships both in 2D and 3D as applied to rock mechanics in mining.
  • utilize the fundamental behavior and characterization of rock mass; and apply standard rock mass classification systems to quantitatively describe rock mass quality.
  • design and perform various standard ASTM rock testing procedures in the laboratory; and interpret data and write laboratory reports in a professional format.
  • apply basic knowledge of math, science and engineering together with modern engineering practices in excavation design and construction of underground openings.
