A detailed introduction to internal combustion engines (ICEs) – including their history, design improvements, principles of operation, range of applications, efficiency, fuels, emissions, environmental impacts, and future uses. Major topics include thermodynamics of spark ignition (SI) and compression ignition (CI) combustion processes, effects of fuels and operating conditions on engine performance and emissions, and approaches used to maximize performance while minimizing emissions.
