Great geographical, technological, cultural and intellectual discoveries, with special emphasis on the clash of cultures between Europeans and non-Europeans, 1300-1600.

  • analyze and synthesize, in writing and in class discussions, primary and secondary sources, and identify issues of historical objectivity and meaning.
  • analyze and critically examine, in writing, at least two texts that raise a particular issue (cultural,religious, intellectual) dealing with the Age of Discovery, 1300-1600.
  • explain, in writing and in class discussion, the impact of European institutions on non-European institutions, and vice versa, as well as the problem of cultural subjectivity in the formation of the European (Western) imagination.
  • explain, in writing/or class discussions, how the interaction of cultures leads to self-discovery, and how this process continues into the twenty-first century.
