Overview
Description
This course introduces the HDFS doctoral degree, emphasizing preparation for success and progress on degree milestones. The course prepares incoming doctoral students with understanding of the program faculty and policies and prioritizes writing techniques and process, with an emphasis on applications for external funding and students’ Second Year Projects. This course spans two semesters (2 credits in the Fall and 1 credit Spring).

Learning Outcomes
- appraise career opportunities available to those with an HDFS doctorate, construct personal career goals, and align program milestone requirements to facilitate these goals.
- design a plan for executing an independent research project, including developing research questions, locating resources within the program/university, and developing an IRB protocol.
- employ successful writing strategies, including technical skills (e.g. grammar, structure) and how to overcome common barriers to efficient writing (e.g. procrastination, dealing with criticism, scheduling writing time).
- plan rigorous, ethical human subjects research, including developing a data collection procedure and preparing all relevant materials to submit the proposed project for IRB review (in coordination with their advisor).
- describe the process for identifying and applying for external funding, identify at least one potential source of pre-doctoral funding, and prepare a plan for applying for this funding.
