Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate a basic understanding of the oceanographic parameters controlling marine microplankton distribution and sedimentation patterns in the modern oceans.
  • recognize which marine microfossil groups are appropriate for dating various rocks of various ages in the fossil record and which are applicable in addressing paleoclimatologic and paleoecologic questions.
  • process a variety of sediments and rocks for microfossils and know which group or groups you are likely to get from each type of sample.
  • demonstrate an introductory knowledge (family and genus level) of microfossil taxonomy for the groups covered.
