- develop perspectives on the enduring questions about higher education in the United States and how they apply today in a contested environment.
- identify and explain the landscape of higher education in the United States in terms of varying characteristics; e.g., control (private, public); instructional level (4-year, 2-year); Carnegie Basic; orientation (secular, religious/independent; and business model (non-profit, for-profit).
- discuss the implications of the variety of higher education institutions in the United States in terms of their mission, programs, institutional control, student characteristics; academic life of faculty; external and internal governance, career opportunities and so forth.
- demonstrate understanding of the historical development and expansion of higher education in the United States.
- identify and discuss foundational concepts common to academic life in universities and develop some perspective as to their viability today.
- identify and analyze the role of the federal and state government in the expansion, support, and control of higher education in the United States.
- identify organization structures and key leadership and administrative roles common to higher education institutions in the United States.
