- identify and explain the causes of the current state of mathematics education as articulated by NCTM in Principles and Standards for School Mathematics and other appropiate sources.
- solve problems using multiple solution strategies in order to analyze mathematical concepts and skills.
- explain the roles of problem solving, manipulatives, cooperative learning, and technology in the teaching of mathematics.
- plan lessons that incorporate a variety teaching strategies consistent with the recommendations of NCTM’s Principles and Standards.
- describe and discuss a variety of means by which mathematical learning can be assessed including classroom applications of assessment as well as broader standardized tests including those developed by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.
- develop and adapt instruction that meets the needs of all students in the diverse classrooms in which the teaching of mathematics occurs.
- define and discuss the teacher’s role in the mathematics classroom, including responsibility to the diversity of students and their various learning styles.
- develop an appreciation for the field of mathematics education, and the professional responsibilities of the secondary mathematics teacher.
