Overview
Description
Analysis and performance of movement and performative techniques used in cinema and concert dance that generate monstrosity, suspense, and horror. Through various modes of instruction, including video viewings, students will use film, dance, and monster theory to engage with material that may include violence and gore, and unsettling, creepy and/or inhuman movements to create original projects.

- identify and define foundational concepts, approaches, and theories from horror cinema and monster studies.
- recognize, articulate, and perform different monstrous movement languages and explain their origins and evolutions.
- compare and contrast different movement aesthetics and modalities of monstrosity in order to assess and/or criticize the effectiveness of monstrosity in horrific and violent texts.
- analyze and interpret horrific and violent texts using movement analysis as the primary mode to articulate subjective readings through written work and group discussion.
- synthesize course material through collaborative projects to create original artistic (re)presentations that explore horrific/monstrous movement in innovative ways.
