- describe the different sources and types of law and their importance to the criminal justice system.
- identify and define the role of criminal law and procedure and the significance of the federal constitution to our legal system and society and identify and explain the limitations of the law and the constitutional reasons why this is so.
- identify and define general principles of substantive law involving various categories of crimes and defenses and identify the elements of particular crimes and apply that knowledge to factual scenarios.
- identify, define, and apply procedural law involving the many stages of the criminal justice process from investigation, the charging process, the plea hearing, the pretrial and trial processes, to the sentencing hearing and appeals.
- describe and explain the different roles of actors in the criminal justice process and the different perspectives they bring to a case or the law.
